Main area of activity of organization:

Sources and development history of the Azerbaijan language, comparative-typological study of Azerbaijani with other Turkic and none-relative languages, study of the languages of the minorities living in Azerbaijan, compiling various dictionaries, linguistic problems of scientific-technical terminology, issues of theoretical and applied linguistics and onomastics.

Main scientific achievements made over the last five years:

The Institute has published or prepared for publishing the following fundamental works:
"History of the Azerbaijani language" (in 3 volumes);
"Historical dictionary of the Azerbaijani language" (in 2 volumes); "Azerbaijan Dialectological  Dictionary" (in 2 volumes);
"Explanatory Dictionary of the Azerbaijani language" (in 3 volumes);
"Orphographic Dictionary of the Azerbaijani language".

Brief information on the organization's history:

The Institute was founded in 1932. In 1936 it was united with the Institute of Literature. An independent institute of Linguistics was created in 1945. In 1951 the Institute was re-joined with the Institute of Literature. From September 1969 the Institute began to function  independently. In 1973 the name of great Azerbaijan poet Nasimi was given to the Institute of Linguistics.
